Toyota’s new generation Hilux for South Africa

Toyota has introduced the latest generation of the Hilux, representing the most significant update since the eighth generation. The new model builds on nearly six decades of heritage while adapting to modern demands for technology, safety and comfort, Toyota says.

A legacy:

The Hilux was first launched in 1968 as a compact utility vehicle. Over eight generations it has become one of the most recognised pickups worldwide, known for durability and capability. Its reputation was famously reinforced in 2003 when the BBC’s Top Gear tested its resilience, and more recently through rally-raid success including Dakar Rally victories.

Built for a new era:

The new Hilux has been developed to meet changing market expectations. Buyers now demand advanced safety systems, connectivity and premium interiors alongside durability. Toyota’s approach has been to retain the qualities that made Hilux popular while introducing refinements for modern use.

New design philosophy:

The design follows Toyota’s “Cyber Sumo” concept, combining technology with toughness. Slimmer LED headlamps, a wider grille and updated wheel designs define the front. At the rear, integrated access steps and modern LED lighting improve practicality and style.

Cabin reimagined:

The interior introduces a new architecture with a horizontal dashboard, improved ergonomics and upgraded materials. Higher grades feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment display, wireless smartphone integration and multiple USB-C charging points. Storage solutions have been redesigned to suit modern lifestyles.

Connectivity:

The Hilux now includes a connected vehicle ecosystem via Toyota Remote and MyToyota applications. Functions include remote monitoring, service scheduling, geo-fencing and vehicle tracking. Built-in Wi-Fi supports both business and entertainment needs.

Most advanced Hilux yet:

Safety systems have been expanded with Toyota Safety Sense 3, offering Pre-Collision detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist and Emergency Steering Assist. Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Safe Exit Assist are available for the first time. Security enhancements include Ultra-Wide Band technology on Smart Entry models and a redesigned gear-lock system.
