New Merc CLA lands in South Africa

The latest Mercedes Benz CLA 200 arrives in South Africa as a compact luxury saloon that focuses as much on digital technology as it does on traditional comfort. It replaces the previous model with more space, updated engineering and a strong emphasis on software driven features.

What is it?

The CLA 200 is an entry point into Mercedes Benz’s smaller luxury range. It sits on a new modular platform and introduces a fresh operating system known as MB.OS. This system underpins most of the car’s functions, from infotainment to navigation, with a clear shift towards connected and continuously updated software.

Exterior:

The design follows familiar coupe like proportions. There is a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a low roofline that give it a stretched appearance. The front features a large grille with a star pattern, flanked by LED headlights. At the rear, the lighting elements echo the same theme. A full-length panoramic glass roof is fitted as standard, which helps give the car a lighter visual presence despite its relatively compact size.

Interior:

Inside, the cabin takes a pared back approach, built around a wide digital display that spans much of the dashboard. This combines the driver display and the central infotainment screen. The centre console sits high and creates a slightly cocooned driving position. Materials are a mix of dark and light finishes, with an emphasis on clean surfaces rather than physical buttons. The large glass roof adds light and improves the sense of space.

Equipment and range:

The most notable feature is the new operating system. It supports over the air updates and integrates artificial intelligence based assistants that can respond to voice commands and navigation queries. The system also links to advanced mapping and driver display functions that project a detailed view of the road environment.

Engine:

The CLA 200 uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 48-volt hybrid system. Power is sent to the front wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Outputs are listed at 120kW and 250Nm, with a claimed fuel consumption of around 5.4litres per 100 km.

Price:

The CLA 200 is priced at R937 000, including a five year or 100 000km-service and maintenance-plan.
