New Bi-Turbo version flies the flag for Mitsubishi’s Triton range

The Triton notwithstanding its solid reputation is fighting an uphill battle with its monthly sales compared to established legacy bakkies like the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-max as well as basically every Chinese newcomer in the bakkie market. The current Triton is close to the bottom of the sales charts and is volumes are significantly lower than the volumes achieved by the Colt and early Triton models in their prime years.

What’s new?

The Bi‑Turbo brings a 2.4‑litre DI‑DC Bi‑Turbo diesel engine producing 150kW and 470Nm, paired with Mitsubishi’s Super Select II 4WD system. The Triton GLS has also been updated with darker styling elements for a sharper look. It also has the full Mitsubishi Safety Sensing suite as well as upgraded infotainment and connectivity features not found in the Edition 46 or Athlete models.

Exterior:

The Bi‑Turbo adopts Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design, with a three‑dimensional grille, sculpted fenders and L‑shaped LED daytime running lights. T‑shaped tail lamps emphasise width at the rear. Roof rails, a styling bar, heated mirrors and an assisted tailgate are now standard equipment.

Interior:

Inside, premium touches include a leather‑wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, synthetic leather seats with suede quilting and carpet flooring. Comfort is enhanced by dual‑zone climate control, vanity mirrors with lids and a dimming rear‑view mirror. Technology upgrades feature a nine‑inch touchscreen with Smartphone‑Link Display Audio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a seven‑inch digital driver’s display.

Model range:

The 2026 Triton line‑up spans Single Cab and Double Cab derivatives, starting at R499 990 for the GLS 4x2 Manual S/C. The Bi‑Turbo now crowns the range, positioned above the Edition 46 4x4 Auto.

Engines and power:

The Bi‑Turbo’s 150kW and 470Nm output surpasses the standard 2.4‑litre models, which deliver lower outputs of 135kW and 430Nm across the line‑up. The Bi-turbo’s two‑stage turbocharger reduces lag at low speeds and sustains boost at higher revs, making it more responsive and versatile than other Triton variants.

Price and warranty:

The Triton Bi‑Turbo 4x4 Auto is priced at R959 990. It sits above the Edition 46 4x4 Auto at R889 990. All Triton models are backed by a five‑year/unlimited mileage warranty, a five‑year/90 000km service plan and roadside assistance.
