BYD expands Shark 6 range with Performance flagship

BYD has expanded its Shark 6 line up in South Africa with the introduction of the new Shark 6 Performance, a plug-in hybrid double cab bakkie that joins the existing Shark 6 Premium.

The new flagship adds more power, greater towing capacity and several additional features while retaining the same plug-in hybrid drivetrain concept.

What is it?

The BYD Shark 6 Performance is a plug-in hybrid double cab bakkie positioned at the top of the Shark 6 range. It competes in South Africa's growing lifestyle and leisure bakkie segment, offering buyers an electrified alternative to conventional diesel- and petrol-powered rivals.

Unlike a conventional hybrid, the Shark 6 can be driven on electric power alone for shorter journeys before the petrol engine assists or takes over when required. BYD says the vehicle has an electric only driving range of up to 80km, while a fully charged battery and full 60 litre fuel tank provide a combined WLTP driving range of up to 640km.

Powertrain:

Power comes from BYD's Dual Mode Off-Road plug-in hybrid system, combining a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors.

The combined system produces 350kW and 700Nm, enabling the bakkie to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 5.5 seconds. Maximum braked towing capacity has increased to 3 500kg.

Energy is supplied by a 29.58kWh battery. AC charging is supported at approximately 7kW, with a full charge taking around four hours. DC charging of up to approximately 55kW can replenish the battery in about 35 minutes under suitable conditions.

The Shark 6 Performance also features all-wheel drive, Crawl Mode for low speed off road driving and Vehicle to Load functionality, allowing electrical equipment to be powered directly from the vehicle.

Exterior:

Externally, the Shark 6 Performance rides on 18-inch wheels and offers 230 mm of ground clearance. It will be available in Outback Orange, Obsidian Black, Snowy White and Atlantis Grey.

Interior:

The cabin retains the layout of the existing Shark 6 but introduces a column mounted gear selector, creating additional storage space around the centre console.

Standard equipment includes a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, electrically adjustable front seats and integrated Google Automotive Services. This provides built in Google Maps navigation and access to selected applications through the Google Play Store without relying on a connected smartphone.

Price:

The BYD Shark 6 Performance is priced at R1 149 900 up from just under R1 million for the other model in the range. The existing Shark 6 Premium remains on sale alongside the new flagship.

Warranty cover includes a five year or 100 000km-vehicle warranty, a five year or 100 000km- maintenance plan and an eight year or 200 000km-battery warranty, subject to BYD South Africa's terms and conditions.
