Chery names its first bakkie Grootman
Chery has named its first bakkie for South Africa Grootman, a name chosen by South Africans. The model is planned to make its local debut in the first quarter of 2027.

Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) has appointed Yolanda Cuba (main photo) as a non-executive Director on their Board of Management.
Yolanda, who joined the Board with effect from 1 June 2024, is the Vice President for the Southern and East Africa regions of the MTN Group. She has over 20 years’ experience in various African markets and across various industries, including the telecommunications, manufacturing and investment sectors.
Additionally, she is a chartered accountant by profession. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Statistics from the University of Cape Town, a Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree in Accounting from the University of Natal and a Master in Commerce degree from the University of Pretoria.
Yolanda joins another non-executive director, Marubini Raphulu, on the Board. Marubini has been serving in this capacity since December 2021.
“We welcome Yolanda to the Board of Management, and we look forward to benefiting from her experience gained from working in different industries and African markets,” says Martina Biene, VWGA Chairperson and Managing Director. “I have no doubt she will bring fresh impetus and a new voice to our Board.”
South Africa’s new vehicle market recorded aggregate domestic sales of 61 645 units in September 2026, an increase of 12.7% compared with the 54 706 units sold during September 2025.
SA Auto Week 2026 is scheduled to take place in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, from 13 to 16 October, with the event marking five years of SA Auto Week.
South Africa’s domestic new-vehicle market strengthened in September, recording 61 645 sales, its highest monthly total of 2026. Sales increased by 3 747 vehicles, or 6.5%, from August’s originally reported total and were 12.7% higher than in September 2025.
