What began as a vehicle sponsorship developed into a national initiative covering literacy, teacher recognition, brand exposure and financial inclusion.

More than 630 schools registered for the Reading Riot competition, which encouraged Grade 6 learners to strengthen their reading through EyeBrainGym's visual learning methodology. Learners progressed through school, provincial and national rounds, with the top finalists gathering at the University of Pretoria for the National Grand Finale on 27 June 2026. The national winning learner was crowned at the event, and the winning teacher, from the Western Cape, received the keys to a BAIC X55 Plus Premium.

The partnership delivered value for each of the parties involved. For education, Reading Riot reached hundreds of schools while raising awareness of literacy development and learning techniques. For teachers, the campaign placed educators at the centre of the celebration. For BAIC South Africa and BAIC Finance, the initiative generated more than R2.3 million in earned media exposure value.

Support from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education opened opportunities to engage with around 4 700 schools across the province, including participation in provincial teacher workshops across five districts. These events gave BAIC dealerships the opportunity to showcase vehicles and engage with educators in local communities. Absa's communication platforms also introduced BAIC to audiences across the country.

The campaign extended into Absa's own operations. During the national Absa Branch Sales Conference, held on 17 and 18 June, frontline colleagues were introduced to the BAIC Finance offering through vehicle displays, presentations and product activations. National branch QTV screens and ATMs further extended the campaign's visibility. Staff and teacher vehicle offers included discounts of up to 15% for staff, up to 12% for teachers, and vehicle insurance priced at R699 per month for the first year.

In the final weeks of the campaign, BAIC Finance and Absa Workplace Banking launched a National Teachers Campaign. Although it ran for a relatively short two week period, it pointed to potential to grow sales, strengthen brand affinity and further support South Africa's teaching community through tailored mobility solutions.

BAIC South Africa, BAIC Finance, Absa Workplace Banking and EyeBrainGym say the Reading Riot partnership has laid the foundation for collaboration that extends beyond a single campaign, combining education, mobility and financial inclusion.
